Reimbursement with Health Insurance Coverage
For children under the age of 9, prescription glasses or contact lenses for conditions such as amblyopia or strabismus are eligible for partial reimbursement when you apply.
Details of the Subsidy
Within the scope of the costs for creating and purchasing prescription glasses or contact lenses, 80% of the cost is subsidized for children before compulsory education, and 70% of the cost is subsidized for children under 9 years old after compulsory education.
Purchase amount (with a maximum limit) × a certain percentage
*Maximum amount: Glasses ¥38,461 (tax included)
/ Contact lens per piece ¥15,862 (tax included)
The cost of creating and purchasing prescription glasses is reimbursed after purchase.
Renewal (Recreation)
Recreation of the glasses under the following two conditions is eligible for the subsidy:
Under 5 years old... The glasses must have been worn for at least one year before renewal.
5 years old and over... The glasses must have been worn for at least two years before renewal.
Application Process
After the patient purchases the glasses or contact lenses at their own expense, they must gather the necessary documents confirmed by the ophthalmologist who performed the examination and submit a medical expense reimbursement application.

Required Documents for Application
・Medical expense reimbursement application form (available at your health insurance office)
・Prescription for glasses or contact lenses for amblyopia or similar (issued by the Japanese Ophthalmologists Association)
・Post-wear examination results (certification of vision, eye position, etc.)
・Receipt for the purchased prescription glasses or contact lenses
Combination with Infant Medical Care
If insurance is applied to prescription glasses or contact lenses, the infant medical care provided by your local municipality may cover the remaining 30% (or 20%) of the cost.
(However, any amount exceeding the subsidy limit will be borne by the patient.)
